Tasmanian sport mourns loss of teenage football talent Emily French

The Tasmanian football and basketball communities are grieving the sudden death of promising young athlete Emily French, with the Tasmania Devils leading tributes to the much-loved teenager.

French, who was already competing at senior level for Wynyard, was part of the AFL National Multicultural Academy and the Devils’ talent pathway program. Her club confirmed the news on Tuesday, describing her passing as a devastating loss.

“Emily started her football journey with our under-14 girls team, where her passion and skill were clear from the outset,” Wynyard said. “Across the past three seasons, she progressed through our Youth Girls pathway and, in Round 6 of 2025, made her senior women’s debut at just 16.”

A standout performer, French represented Tasmania at the under-16 National Championships and was involved in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and Multicultural Program. Her impact extended beyond the field, with the club highlighting her warmth, positivity and kindness.

“Emily’s bright spirit and caring nature made her a treasured teammate and friend. She will be remembered fondly by all who knew her,” the statement said. “Our deepest sympathies go out to her family and friends during this incredibly difficult time.”

French made an immediate impression at senior level, kicking five goals in only her second match for Wynyard, followed by two more in her next appearance. Her selection in the Devils’ junior program came as the club prepares for its future entry into the AFL and AFLW.

Earlier this year, French received her under-16 representative jumper from former GWS AFLW player and recent Tasmania VFLW recruit Meghan Gaffney.

The Tasmania Devils and AFL Tasmania both issued tributes, describing French as a valued member of the state’s football pathway and expressing condolences to her loved ones.

Wynyard Basketball Association also paid tribute, remembering her as a talented player and a supportive presence even after she stopped playing.

“She was a lovely girl who was always smiling and continued to support her friends from the sidelines,” the association said. “Our heartfelt thoughts are with her family and friends at this sad time.”
